Dredge: Hermitage walkthrough

Dredge Guides

An image showing the Hermit from the Hermitage pursuit in Dredge.

Hermitage is one of the main quests in Dredge, leading to one of five relics needed to complete the game as part of The Collector pursuit. As part of said pursuit, you’ll be asked to head to Gale Cliffs, north east of The Marrows, where you can trigger Hermitage.

Before doing anything else, when reaching Gale Cliffs, you’ll want to stop at the Dusty Pontoon – there is one Pontoon found in each area of the game with a traveling merchant that allows you to upgrade gear, sell fish, sleep, and trigger a fun pursuit through.

Speak with the Hermit located at the bay to the right of the giant stone arch in Gale Cliffs.

Once you’ve done that, sail towards the large stone arch and the dock to its right. As you rest there, an old man known as the Hermit will speak with you, kick-starting Gale Cliff’s main pursuit, where you’ll need to reunite two brothers and end their long-standing feud by finding and returning their family crest.

How to find the Family Crest in Dredge

The family crest can be found at the center of Gale Cliffs beside a waterfall. The Hermit marked its location on your map, but the way to it is patrolled by a giant sea creature that stalks the narrow cliffways and attacks anyone it sees.

Many of the shortcuts towards the bay are also blocked off by debris, which you can destroy later once you’ve progressed this quest.

The easiest way to the Family Crest is to sail around Gale Cliffs to its southernmost point and sail up the narrow cliffs straight to the open bay (The cross).

Right now, the easiest way to get to the center and obtain the Family Crest is by sailing around Gale Cliffs towards the abandoned camp dock in the north, and then taking any of the openings straight to the waterfall.

The monster may appear and attack you while you’re in the bay, so be quick and sail to the shimmering water pool to dredge the Family Crest and then leave as soon as you can.

You’ll want to be quick when trying to dredge the Family Crest as the locale’s monster will attack you.

You’ll want to dredge the Family Crest and get out as soon as possible.

With the Family Crest in hand, return to the Hermit, who will ask you to head back to Ingfell and hand the crest to his brother, the Whaler. He’ll hand you some explosives, but before accepting, his brother asks you to destroy the wall of loose debris found immediately through the large arches in Gale Cliffs, marked with yellow flags.

Once you’ve destroyed the wall of debris, head back to the Whaler, who will confirm he’s ready for his brother. Return to the Hermit and speak with him, and you’ll be able to add him to your cargo – just make sure there is a 3×2 space for him – and take him to his brother.

The Whaler will ask you to free up some of the loose debris around Gale Cliffs.

    Locating the Music Box Relic

You’ll get an adorable cutscene between them as they reunite, and the Whaler will provide you with some additional explosives, which you can use back at the Hermit’s home to destroy a wall of debris and unlock a small bay where you can obtain the Music Box Relic.

The Music Box Relic can be found just past this wall of debris.

Dredge the Music Box Relic and head back to The Collector.

Once obtained, you can quickly return to The Collector and offer him the Music Box Relic, unlocking a trophy and achievement and crossing another of the game’s five Relics off your list. With this done, try any of the other Relic pursuits or try your hand at some of the game’s side missions, like Hooded Figures and exotic fish.

That’s the guide! I hope it’s helped you work out how to get each relic, and feel free to check our other Dredge guides to help you complete the game.
