Black Salt Games, the developer behind one of my favourite indie games – Dredge – of all time, has announced the formation of a brand-new sister studio, a new game from said studio, and has shared a little hint as to what their follow-up to Dredge is.
Team Trifold is the new studio joining Black Salt Games and Disc 2 Games, which was formed last year and is currently developing turn-based tactics game Canvas City.
The three studios all work from Christchurch, New Zealand, and are supported by the newly-established Saltworks Entertainment, which Black Salt Games says “brings together shared expertise” across multiple verticals within game development.
The new studio is busy at work developing Nothing Lost for PC via Steam, an action roguelike where players battle through ever-shifting dungeons, inherit the powers of fallen heroes, and build a lineage that “grows stronger over time”.
Speaking about the game, Jed Uy of Team Trifold, said: “What resonates most with me is that Nothing Lost is a game that celebrates the optimism of incremental human progress. The story and gameplay mechanics work together to express the notion that in some sense, time is never truly wasted.
Wilson Teo, also of Team Trifold, added: “Unlike other action-roguelikes, Nothing Lost remembers every attempt the player has made. With each spirit’s power you infuse, you’ll begin to compound them, making each run more powerful over time.”
Black Salt Games has also shared a sneak peek of the studio’s next game, with an early glimpse of the world being created.
The image shared by Black Salt Games looks like an old building situated in the deep of the woods.
In the mean time, Black Salt’s sister studio Disc 2 Games has released a free Steam demo for Canvas City, an RPG and turn-based tactics game that blends roller skating, street art, and tactical combat.
I previewed the game – you can read my preview here – and, although I wasn’t very good, I found it incredibly fun, with a lot of room for creativity and freedom.
